Ship Group Notes – 23rd January 2010
By Helen (minor edit by Robert)
Party: Lassa, Erik, T’rynn and Mayner
Opening Note: This is only a transferring of the notes I had taken down at the time of the game and will not be quite the same when it is fleshed out and written properly. :>
The Wind Saber is in dry dock at Marienburg getting small repairs, scraping the hull and some new paint. Erik arrives and finds Lassa. He has a note from Herr Richtofen for her and says that there will be another joining them for this voyage. T’rynn and his hawk were already with Lassa on the Wind Saber, as he is her cousin. A few days later Mayner shows up and he has a pouch for Lassa. In the pouch is an official writ granting her the authority to be an official pirate hunter, which is the cover for this recovery mission. The accompanying letter reads: South, off the North Coast of Estalia near the port city of Bilbali a ship went down. Look for the wreck at the coordinates given and recover a stolen cylinder. Further the letter gives warnings about fierce storms and lightning as well as other observed properties of the cylinder. Lassa works out a recovery plan with her first and guests. It will still be a few more days before the dry dock work is done.
Mayner and T’rynn go out looking for some ale to have some for the voyage. They are bored having to stay on the ship all the time, so this task gives them some purpose. The first tavern is full, so Mayner walks over to a table and tells the five sailors drinking to go get back to work, that this is his table. The one big guy with a gold earring tells him it was theirs. Mayner slams his mug of ale into his face, smashing it, then rips off his gold earring. The other four stand up to get them, but Mayner and T’rynn take them all out in just a few minutes – just using their fists. One guy has a broken leg and their leader is unconscious. The remaining three are in very sad shape. The barkeep has some of his bouncers haul out the sailors, and dump them outside the tavern. (It is suspected that all their pockets were looted in this process.) As this is happening, the noise level in the room comes back up to a normal buzz. Mayner clears the table with one arm, then he and T’rynn sit down. A barmaid comes over to take their orders. They stay there for a good one and a half hours, chatting and drinking, then move on to another bar to sample the ale there. At the end of the day, the fourth and last bar they visit has the best ale they can find in this port, so Mayner buys a keg to bring back to the ship. Lassa greets them upon their return. When they relate the day’s events, she tells them she’s glad no one was killed and that she didn’t have to go fetch them out of the local lock-up.
Mayner and T’rynn go out and about much the same on the next two days. But most disappointingly, there is Always an empty table waiting for them no matter which tavern they enter. It kind of takes the fun out of things for them. On the last day in port, as they were sitting at a table, they notice that all the other patrons in the tavern were suddenly clearing out. They sit and wait, wanting to see what will happen next. Then the guy who owned the gold earring from the first tavern, on their first day bar-hopping, walks in with five big guys armed with clubs. Mayner and T’rynn stand up and shift away from their table. They just stand there staring at them for a few minutes, so Mayner taunts them with the gold earring still attached to a piece of the guy’s ear. The six of them charge at once. Mayner and T’rynn use only their fists and kill two of the ones in the front, breaking their necks as they attack. Of the remaining four, T’rynn manages to hit one, but then they all run off. So they sit down and drink their ale and wait for the town watch. The town watch arrives and gets the story from the bartender. Then they come over and tell the pair that it’s all fine, since they were the ones being attacked by the bigger group. The bodies are removed and the other patrons return and sit down, but they are shifting their tables even further away from Mayner and T’rynn. The barmaid brings then a heaping platter of food. They are not charged for either the food or the ale they consume when they finally leave for the day. Lassa has again heard all about the incident (she has had one of her regular crew following them around town to report back to her while in port) before they return. She greets them and again thanks them for having restraint.
Erik finally finds an alchemist and buys three water breathing potions for a high price and two healing potions. Lassa comes in later and buys up the remaining six water breathing potions he had on hand for 35 gold each. They will come in handy later.
The next morning we set sail. We head out sailing west and later, once we are clear of the horizon, will bear to the south. Two weeks out and we arrive in the area where we want to conduct our search per the coordinates given us by Richtofen. So we start our pirate hunt. On the fourth day T’rynn’s hawk spots something to the east, so we tack against the wind and find a ship out there running up, staying close to the coastline. Nothing looks to stand out about the ship, so we drop back below the horizon and pace them from afar. We do that all night from our last sighting by hawk. At morning the hawk sees the ship again, but in a different place. We head toward it to get it in sight since there has been a change. T’rynn hears thuds and we realize it’s cannon fire. We decide to come in fast. The ship we had paced was a pirate ship and they were just at the boarding stage with an armed merchant. We rush in. They now see us as they go back aboard their own ship and try to cut and run. We are faster. They fire at us with cannon, but it goes across our stern. We maneuver and return fire and take out their main mast. They manage to fire on us. We broadside them. Finally we move over and board their ship. We four get to board the ship first. There was a bloody battle where Mayner beheaded two of the pirates and T’rynn disemboweled another. They finally ran and surrendered after we killed ten of their number; leaving twenty-five pirates. We tie them up. We heal up our own crew and ourselves. The Wind Saber lost nine crew to the grape shot. We put the remaining pirates into the hold and under guard. We search the pirate ship then put it into tow. We return to the merchant ship and find that half their crew is dead. So we rig up a makeshift sail for them and all of us limp into the port they were headed towards since it’s as close as any other.
On the pirate ship we found 12 kegs of powder, 37 shot, 850 gold pieces which all were taken over to the Wind Saber. The rest: ship (itself), 2 cannon, 10 pistols, 2 rifles, cutlasses, axes, swords, bailing hooks, etc are all to be sold when we reach port. Mayner is taking two short barrels of ale (dwarves… go figure!) and some fine metal he found which he uses to make two sturdy chains. One to secure his own axe to himself in case, during battles. And one he made for Lassa’s sword. We are headed toward Bilbali in Estalia, which is the merchant’s immediate destination. Since we are towing the pirate ship, it takes about a week for us to make port. Upon arrival, we get 500 gold bounty for the pirates. The merchant gives us ½ dozen bottles of good wine as a thank you for our escort. On our third day in port, the pirate ship is auctioned off. We receive 4500 gold, of which 1500 goes to the crew and 2200 goes toward the ship’s fund. So, out of our other 850 gold, there is a taken a 25 gold fee for docking. We have another 150 gold for other expenses (forgot to note what – sorry!) and another 120 gold for something else. This leaves us 560 gold to split into 140 gold for the party with another 200 gold from the ship’s sale to each of us. I am assuming the earlier 150 gold deduction was for the families of the dead crew. ??? I could be wrong. :> But 340 gold each is kinda nice at least. :>
