Ship Group Notes – 18th February 2017
By Helen (minor edit by Robert)
Party: Lassa, Espn, Erik, and Maynor.
We stay under the tree line as we jog away. After about eight minutes we stop to figure out what to do now. We see torches roughly where our tunnel was located. We set out again with Espn using her persistent winds to erase our tracks. After an hour of travel, we stop to look at the map. Lassa fails her roll, but Erik makes his and figures out the one with the journal is of the Slan area of the northern portion of the island with the “X’s” marked on a few islands. It appears very old.
We decide to build an underground chamber to use to hide from the pirates. We’re using a large tube, or capillary, for the entrance and we also need to have an emergency escape tube – just in case. And a smaller one for ventilation. Espn meds up and we plan on a schedule. Earth elemental for two hours, then she meds up for three hours, and cycle again as needed to make our underground complex. We travel north for another half hour and we find two large boulders with a crevice between them. At the rate of 60 cubic yards per hour for the elemental, we decide 3 cubic yards for an upslope tunnel before opening up into the chamber. The rock turns out to be quite hard and we estimate this might last for hundreds of years.
As the elemental tunnels upward, most of us are behind it, in its wake. T’rynn stays at the crevice and sends up his bird as an additional sentinel. Lassa comes back to get a report after a bit and T’rynn reports that three of the ships have pulled up their anchors and are out looking for any ships in the area. There was a large group of pirates trying to trace our tracks up the volcano. Another, smaller group, was tracking along the beaches, going onward from the cove as their starting point.
Espn’s elemental builds a fifteen by fifteen foot chamber with a domed roof. We have it build a sleeping chamber and a latrine. We also have it build a chimney that is made to disperse the smoke and light from below. It will last thousands of years with the look and texture of finely polished granite. Lassa and Maynard go out and gather firewood and torch materials from nearby. We only use the torches in the main chamber, itself. Espn have her earth elemental create a reservoir for water and has her water elemental fill it for us. But Maynard and T’rynn are a little restless with the enforced captivity. But still we pass the rest of the day in comfort with trading out the watch when needed.
At dawn T’rynn sends up his bird to scout things out. He reports one of the patrolling ships has been changed out, but they are still doing regular patrol circuits of the island to prevent our escape. The one team still combing the beaches are still searching for traces of us. The larger team that tried to follow us up the volcano have turned back, but in truth, we don’t know for sure that they have given up. Still they seem to have never found out where we went from the time we started actively covering our trail. Maynard rolled a 48, so he does not run out to go kill something. The next day he rolls a 37 and we send out the bird to scout for us, again. T’rynn reports they have switched out one of the patrolling ships again. There are still people scouting the beaches. And they have four groups stationed at the north, south, east and west points on the beaches, as if serving as sentries and at the ready, in case of need.
Lassa and Maynard went out to get more firewood and torch material. Maynard made a roll of 3 and found some prime firewood! Erik failed his roll on ciphering the journal today. So he practices his acrobatics while the rest of the party is watching today. Yes, our amusements can be simple at times like this.
We decide to sneak out at night, at first dark to get as close as we can to check on our boat. We need to see if it’s still intact, so we can make our escape. We decide to have Espn summon an air elemental to attack the camp as a distraction. Then we’ll attack the pirates while it’s running loose.
We head out for the boat and make all our rolls, but T’rynn almost stumbles, but ended up fine. We got to the boat and it didn’t appear to have been found, nor disturbed. Espn casts her air elemental, which goes out and starts to wreak havoc with the main fire at the closest camp of pirates. We start our attack on the closest group instead. T’rynn and Lassa fire off their elf bows, while Espn uses her assault of stones. Maynard runs in and starts his sweeps with his 2-handed axe. He does 12 pts on #2, 15 pts on #3, which kills the last one. He then hits #2 with 17 pts and kills him, too.
New round. Lassa moves up and swings on #1 and does some damage. T’rynn missed his next bowshot. Espn hit #5 with assault of stones. Then T’rynn hits #5 and finishes him off. Espn gets #6 with her next assault of stones. Lassa does 8 pts of damage to #1, but then Maynard steps up and does 26 pts and splits the guy in half. The campfire is now out.
The air elemental has kept all the other pirates busy with disrupting the camp, but it will not last beyond this round as it is now surrounded. We rush back and grab the boat and get it down to the water. We start rowing out as Lassa gets the sail set up.
The other pirates haven’t seen us yet. But now they are getting over to the doused campfire. We keep rowing. They start cursing and someone shouts, “In the water!” We hear four gunshots but nothing comes close. Maynard and T’rynn continue rowing, while Erik, Espn and Lass get the mast set into place. No cannon, nor bowshots are heard and we get the sail up. Espn uses her favorable winds spell and gets us out of the area quickly. All this took about five minutes. We don’t use any light sources, which might attract more attention than we truly want.
We see a pirate ship coming in out of the west, but all the furor has died down on the beach. It doesn’t notice us so far. Then we think they finally get some signals from the beach (lantern signal flashes) and they are tacking to turn and come after us.
But, we meet up with the ship from off of the Wind Saber and both boats make it back safe to the ship. We make the roll on an eighteen out of eighty. The ship sails back to Marianburg and it ends up being an uneventful two week’s voyage. No cool loot this time. And we contact Richtofen’s agent with the news that we got “The Package.”
And so our adventures continue…
