Ship Group Notes – 29th April 2017
By Helen (minor edit by Robert)
Party: Lassa, Espn, Erik, and Maynor.
The party bids farewell to T’rynn as he received an urgent summons to return home to Lothern upon Ulthuan. Lassa bids him to give a note she’s written to her mother and father, which she had forgotten to send to them previously, so added a few lines to it, since. He teases her about how long it’s been sitting in her desk but she only laughs. It’s sad to see him leave, but glad he can go back and help out with the family. He departs on a beautiful elven ship, The Heart of the Sea, which his family sent out for him.
We clean up the ship, restock sundries and shop. After four days Richtofen’s contact shows up. He has a courier ready to take the small ruined chest, map and journal straight to Richtofen. He promised a new mission soon. (Hey! He forgot to pay us for this one!) Five days later he has an envelope and a small tied-up box from his agent. In the envelope is a map which shows a small island just off of Norsca in the Sea of Claws. A Richtofen party was sent there a year ago. There have been sightings of activity with flashes of light at night. A second group was sent but they have not been seen, either. It boils down to either a rescue, or merely finish the original mission. The ship that had been hired has also disappeared. Lassa finds the box contains fifteen potions of various kinds; extra strength D6 full health potions. Lassa gives out three to each party members and puts the rest into her safe. Lassa has a meeting with the party and ship’s officers to explain where we’re going to investigate the weird lights.
We set sail the next day and sail for about five days and see two ships on the horizon to the north as we approach Norsca. We tack a little more to the east, then to the north and on the sixth day arrive. The island it’s about ten miles by fifteen miles overall. There are no reports of lights as we approach it. It has an irregular shape, kind of like a peanut. We circle the island to get a feel for it. It’s not a volcanic island and if covered with a coniferous forest with a spiny-like ridge running roughly down the middle. There was no sign of any ship wreckage in the waters around the island. We anchor off the west coast of the island at about two miles out for the night. During the night, we don’t see any ghosts, nor lights. We sail in, in the morning. The Wind Saber comes in close enough to drop off a small boat then backs off to the two mile limit. We have devised a set of signals for different situations and carry a hooded lantern with us to use for this purpose. The crewmen drop us off on the shore and we have no problems with the landing.
We decide to head south along the beach under the shade of the trees, but not walking within the forest, itself. We disturb the wildlife and hear a mountain lion. Espn and Lassa make their rolls and see some worked stone blocks within the tree line. It’s a dark colored rock with black and gray throughout. We go to look at it, since it’s poking out of the soil. We look further and see more blocks which are about one foot by two feet blocks of stone and because they seemed embedded into the soil, we’re not sure how deep they go. They seem scattered with a pattern. Maynard notes they are pretty old worked stones, and it seems like there is no foundation and the trees are growing over the remains of a building. And the trees that are growing over the blocks already seem pretty old, too.
We decide to continue onward around the island and make it to the halfway point. Night is coming so we make camp just inside the tree line to be out of line of sight for anyone out on the sea. We set out watches. During the second watch, Maynard sees a reddish glow about northwest of our camp. And it’s a steady, red glow. He wakes up Lassa to see it, but she cannot make out any details with her spyglass. After about twenty minutes, it disappears. It wasn’t a “bright” glow, so Lassa felt it wouldn’t have attracted any passing ships. The rest of the night is uneventful.
The next morning we continue along the beach at the tree line edge. We make a full circle of the island and realize there was nothing else unusual to see the whole time. So, we head directly east into the inland foliage. We make our rolls and find the remains of a road! It’s a cobble-stone road that seems to follow the ridge from north to south. It looks very old. We get to the top of the ridge and Eric climbs a tree to the top and then climbs down to tell us there are lots of trees. LOL We decide to go north. Late in the afternoon we find a clearing. There are some irregular circling stones around it’s edges. Maynard sees a pile of bushes, stones and dirt at one end of the clearing. We see that the plants were uprooted and appear to have been here a while. The party decides to check out the middle of the clearing and the stones that are there. Espn thinks the middle is very full of magical energy and we should not go into the center. There are stairs leading down near it.
Erik drinks a dark vision potion and can now see as well as the rest of us, so we head down the stairs which seem to go down about seventy-five to one hundred feet. At the bottom is a small room with a wood door which is banded in iron, in front of us. We don’t know it, but we’ve set off a magical alarm. The door seems to be locked, so Maynard kicks it in. The door breaks and the room on the other side is well lit. Nothing is in it. A trap door opens up in the middle of the room and Maynard disappears from sight. It was a twenty-foot drop onto some iron spikes and Maynard only takes one point of damage. Maynard grabs two of the spikes and uses them to help pull himself up out of the trap as he rams them into the wall to kind of “walk” up the wall of the pit. As he is climbing, two orc-like things come into the room from a door at the far side of the room. They’re much larger than regular orcs. Lassa gets off a shot with her bow and does fourteen points of damage. Espn casts an earth elemental. Erik does an aimed shot and does fourteen points of unstopped damage. We back through the door we came through and put the elemental in the doorway in front of us. Lassa does another thirteen points on her target while Erik does another fourteen points of damage at range.
They move to the door. Maynard delays until the orc-like things have padded him by. They attack the elemental and in one attack, destroy it. Maynard finishes climbing up and pulls himself out and then takes out his swivel gun. He does an aimed shot on number two, too. Next round both Lassa and Erik do aimed shots but both bounce. Espn calls up another earth elemental and Maynard steps up to do a sweeping blow. Maynard does thirteen points of damage to both orcs. The orcs take out the second elemental. Then number two turns to face Maynard, who does another sweeping blow which does some damage to both orcs. Lassa wounds number one, as she steps up to block the doorway. Maynard does another sweeping blow and Espn does an assault of stones. The orc swing and Lassa dodges and her next blow bounces. Lassa takes fourteen points of damage and is now down to two points. Maynard goes down and uses a fate point! After a lot of misses and dodges, Lassa finally rolls a six and does extra damage and takes out number one. She moves up to confront number two and Erik moves up beside her. Espn casts assault of stones, but it doesn’t seem to do any damage. Erik tosses his sword on a fumble. Lassa does minimal damage and dodges, or he misses his attacks. Espn finally takes it down with an extra damage assault of stones, doing eighteen points of damage. We heal up and Espn meds up for an hour, having retreated to our small entry room.
Loot – 32 gold, 19 silver. Lassa drags the orcs bodies over an dumps them into the pit.
And so our adventure continues…
